Most people who are considering taking vitamin B shots are not all that crazy about the thought of getting a single shot, much less taking b12 shots on a regular basis. If you fall into this category, you may be wondering why people decide to take vitamin b 12 shots when it would be so much easier (and less painful) to pop a pill.
The key is absorption!
When you take a B12 pill, the reality is the VERY little of it will actually absorb into your blood stream. In fact, taking 500 micrograms of cyanocobalamin results in the absorption of just 1.8 microgram into your blood stream. ( And this is if your body has not issues with B12 absorption.) This does not meet your daily needs and may not be good enough for someone battling low levels of B12.
The problem is that it is very difficult to get enough B12 in to your blood stream to make any type of health difference with a pill. I have tried both and when I take a daily B12 tablet, I do not feel that I get the same boost that I get with a vitamin b shot. When I take B 12 shots, I feel the energy boost almost immediately.
If your body is severely depleted of B12, (and many people are even though they don’t know it) it can take up to six b vitamin shots to get the B12 levels in your liver back up to normal. After this, you can simply take a once a month shot.
If you are taking vitamin b shots for weight loss, you will most likely take a weekly shot during your weight loss program.
Now, for people that do not have low levels of B12 and are not vegan, a B12 oral supplement is fine to make sure your body is getting the B12 that it needs. You just need to understand that most mutli-vitamin supplements are not sufficient to meet your daily requirement of B12. Also, if you are experiencing any b12 deficiency symptoms, you should consider talking to your doctor about whether taking shots is best for you.
There is some research that suggests that sublingual supplementation is better than a pill and that taking extremely high levels of b12 in a pill form can be effective, but the jury is still out on this. For now, vitamin b shots are considered the best way to ensure the absorption of vitamin b12, especially if you have vitamin b12 deficiency symptoms.
