What Does a B 12 Shot Do?

by Wendy

B 12 shots have been getting a lot of buzz lately.  It seems that just about everyone – from housewives to celebrities – are talking about taking a regular b 12 shot is helping them.  What is all the fuss about?  It is just hype?

There are obviously numerous medical reasons that people take a b 12 shot, many of which I have discussed in prior posts.  Obviously, medical reasons are not why stars like Justin Timberlake and Madonna are taking a regular vitamin b 12 shot! I am sure they are not experiencing vitamin b12 deficiency symptoms.

The truth is that many people take b 12 shots for non-medical reasons.  As an example, many people believe that b 12 shots can help improve the quality of your skin.  Two other reasons that people take vitamin b 12 shots are for stress reduction and increased energy. Perhaps the biggest reason that b 12 shots have become so popular is that they are believed by many to help with weight loss.

B 12 Shot for Weight Loss

Taking a b 12 shot as part of a medically supervised diet has become very common.  B 12 causes your metabolism to increase, thus helping you burn calories more efficiently.  It gives you an energy boost which may help you stick to your work out plan.  Low levels of b12 can lead to stress and depression, both of which can lead to weight gain. Taking a b 12 injection can help deal with the stress and depression and therefore may make it easier for you to drop weight.

While  b12 shots can certainly help support a healthy weight loss plan, it is important to note that it is not a cure all.  There is no scientific evidence that suggests that you can take a b 12 shot and keep doing what you are doing and expect the pounds to magically melt away. (Wouldn’t that be nice though?)

There is one study conducted at the Mayo Clinic that does suggest that people who take regular vitamin supplements may gain less weight over time.  Still, this does not suggest that taking a b 12 shot is a magical formula for weight loss.

B12 and Energy

The ability for a b12 injection to give you a boost in energy has not been widely studies in recent years.  However, a double-blind trial that was conducted some years ago showed that even individuals who did not have low levels of b12 experienced an increase in energy when given a regular b12 shot.  There has also been some research that indicates that a b12 shot can help improve energy levels in people who are suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.  And of course, if you have b12 deficiency symptoms, a b 12 shot can help to cure them quickly.
